The Basset Hounds

 BASSET HOUND HISTORY

The Basset Hound breed is an old breed of ancient lineage which has its traditional origins in France. Bassets were raised by royalty in France, and also Belgium, for trailing and flushing rabbits, deer and foxes. Closest relatives of the Basset are the old French Bloodhound and the St. Huberts Hound. The Basset's keen sense of smell is unmatched by any breed, with the exception of the Bloodhound. Another distinctive trait is the Basset's voice, which is deep and resonant. Bassets tend to be quite vocal when they get excited, but rarely if ever bark or howl out of boredom.

If raised with love and affection, Basset puppies will grow up to be loyal, lovable and intelligent companion. Bassets are great with children, since they are very calm and even-tempered. Although bred as a hunting dog that enjoys open fields and the countryside, Bassets adapt very well to "city life" and are quite content spending most of the day lounging indoors in a home or apartment.

BASSET HOUND APPEARANCE

All around, Basset Hounds are a very graceful and noble dog, although at first glance they may appear somewhat awkward. The typical basset hound runs from 12 to 15 inches in height and 35 to 60 pounds in weight. Bassets are very heavy boned and sturdy dogs which weigh more than they appear to. The typical basset has a tremendous appetite and will eat much more food than needed if given the opportunity. Basset owners should be very careful to not overfeed their animals and give them sufficient exercise.

BASSET HOUND CARE

Basset Hounds require little extra care over the average dog. The typical Basset has ears which when drawn forward extend well beyond the end of the nose. This prevents air circulation and combined with the Basset's slightly oily coat can result in excessive wax build up in the ears if they are not cleaned regularly. Bassets also shed quite a bit despite their short coats and require regular brushings.

If you've never owned a basset hound, remember you will need a good sense of humor and a high tolerance level.  These are wonderful dogs but always looking for something to get them into trouble.

    INTRODUCING DUCHESS!

Hi everyone, my name is Duchess and I am only 6 years old.  I was born 06/2002.   I love to have my belly rubbed and to always be near you.  I will sleep in the bed with you if you let me.  I'm also comfortable on your couch.  I do get upset when you leave the house without me but that's just because I want to go with you!  I am house-trained and really looking forward to a home I can call my own.  Will you be that home?

ADOPTED!!!

Meet Boo Boo! (affectionately called Froggie because of the way his back legs stretch out to his side when he sits down.) This handsome hound was surrendered by his owners simply because they didn't want him anymore- they hadn't even given the fellow a name! Boo is a purebred Basset Hound- just look at those ears! He is only about two years old. He's a playful boy who loves a good romp, but nothing beats lovin' from humans! He gets along pretty well with other dogs, but tends to be a bit dominant. He could also use some work on a leash since he pulls a bit, but with some work, we're sure he'd be walking like a champ in no time! Boo Boo is current on annual vaccinations and has tested negative for heartworms.

                MEET BEATRICE

NOTE:  THIS IS A COURTESY POSTING FOR BEATRICE'S CURRENT OWNER:

Hi there!  My name is Beatrice and I am one silly girl!  I am around 7-8 years of age.  My story begins at a shelter where I was dumped with my 3 puppies.  My puppies and I were rescued and eventually adopted out separately.

Would you have room in your life for a big squishy couch potato like me?  In my current home, I live with 11 other dogs of different shapes and sizes.  I don't care for this so I would probably do best in a home without so many others.  I really love attention and sometimes I don't get as much as I would like so I have been acting out lately.  I would really prefer to have a smaller, playful dog to play with so if you have one of those that would be great!  I tend to try to be the alpha dog here at my house and that's not working since we already have one of those here.

Please don't let this put you off about me, though, I really am a very loving, gentle, sweet girl!  I can play patty cake and I have a beautiful singing voice!  I love treats of any kind and I also love to go bye bye if you would be willing to take me.  I'm not  crazy about playing fetch but I do enjoy a good squeaky toy occasionally.

I tend to be a little afraid of men at first but if I come live with you and you have a man at your house then please instruct him to have patience with me and we'll be best friends in no time!  I can be quite the hussy around some men and this seems to make people laugh but I don't know why.

I know how to use a doggy door like a pro and never potty in the house since I have one here.  If you don't have a doggy door where you are then I will do my best to let you know that I have to go out.  I may need patience with this as well.  I am up to date on all my shots and heartworm prevention so I am ready to go if you pick me.

Please be sure to fill out an application and put my name on it and you will make my day!!  Also, please contact my mommy to let her know of your interest in me and she can answer any questions or concerns you may have.  Her email address is tubbytalks@aol.com .

Thank you so much for your interest!!
Love, Beatrice
